Provence, an iconic region in the South of France

Set in the heart of southern France, Provence is known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural legacy and exceptional quality of life.

From the turquoise waters of the Calanques in Cassis to the lavender fields of the Luberon and the dramatic cliffs of the Gorges du Verdon, the region offers endless opportunities for exploration.

Nature lovers also enjoy the ochre hills of Rustrel, the peaceful salt marshes of the Camargue, and the beauty of Porquerolles Island.

Provence is also home to some of France’s most historic and vibrant cities. Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon and Arles each offer a unique blend of heritage, creativity and local character.

Each year, Provence's outstanding quality of life attracts new residents from across France and internationally. Some families come for a few years, others settle for good, all in search of a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. The diverse backgrounds of our students reflect this growing movement.

Five reasons why Provence is an ideal place to live and learn

Provence offers a distinctive environment and a high quality of life. Families appreciate the region for its safety, its comfortable pace and its close connection to nature. It also provides children with a supportive setting for learning, with access to both cultural activities and outdoor experiences.

 The natural beauty of Provence

Provence offers a wide range of natural settings, from beaches and quiet coves to hills and open countryside filled with vineyards, olive trees and lavender fields.

Its scenery shifts with the seasons, creating a changing backdrop of colours, light and atmosphere.

Living and learning in such an environment encourages curiosity, focus and personal growth. It also creates opportunities for hands-on experiences. At SVIS, we see how daily contact with nature contributes to a positive and balanced learning experience.

Easy access to urban and cultural life

Beyond its natural beauty, Provence is home to some of France's most captivating cities, all easily accessible from the SVIS campus:

  • Aix-en-Provence: Just 15 minutes from the school, Aix-en-Provence is a charming and welcoming city, known for its art galleries, museums, festivals and open-air markets. With a lively atmosphere, it is a small city especially popular among families.
  • Marseille: Around 30 minutes from the school, Marseille is a large, cosmopolitan city with a strong cultural identity. Known for its historic old port and vibrant atmosphere, it offers a different urban experience within easy reach of the campus.
  • Avignon: Known for its medieval city walls and summer arts festival, Avignon is a key cultural destination in the region. The city is also home to well-preserved historic sites, including the famous bridge featured in the traditional French song.
  • Arles: Arles is known for its Roman heritage, contemporary arts scene and architectural landmarks. The city offers a unique mix of ancient history and modern creativity, making it a rich and engaging place to explore.

Sainte Victoire International School location offers families a rare balance between peaceful natural surroundings and access to vibrant city life, with countless opportunities for cultural and family activities.

A region shaped by art and history

Provence's cultural legacy is remarkable, shaped by centuries of history and reflected in its Roman ruins, medieval castles and historic monuments. The region has inspired France's greatest artists and writers, including Marcel Pagnol, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cézanne.

Our students benefit from a unique setting: the Sainte-Victoire mountain, painted more than 80 times by Cézanne, rising just beyond the campus. Whether in class, on the golf course or enjoying a lunch break, this striking backdrop offers daily inspiration. It also provides countless opportunities for cultural outings and enriching school projects.

Outdoor activities all year round

Living in Provence means having nature as your backyard playground. With nature all around and the Mediterranean Sea close by, there are plenty of ways for families to stay active throughout the year:

  • Hiking: Well-marked trails can be found all over the region, especially around Mount Sainte-Victoire, the Calanques near Cassis, and the Luberon Natural Park.
  • Cycling: The region’s rolling hills and quiet roads make it a favourite among both casual riders and experienced cyclists.
  • Water sports: The nearby Mediterranean coastline offers swimming, paddleboarding, sailing, kayaking and diving.
  • Climbing: The limestone cliffs of Sainte-Victoire, the Verdon Gorge and Cap Canaille are great places for climbers of all levels.
  • Horse riding: Many riding centres in the Bouches-du-Rhône area offer lessons and scenic rides through the countryside.

These natural playgrounds become an extension of our students’ learning environment, offering real-life experiences that complement what they study in class. At SVIS, students enjoy a daily hour of physical activity built into their schedule, supporting their well-being and personal development. Thanks to the wide range of outdoor opportunities in the region, they are encouraged to explore new disciplines, take on challenges and grow through new experiences.

A strong culinary tradition

No description of Provence would be complete without mentioning its food culture. Local cuisine is simple, seasonal and deeply rooted in tradition. Olive oil, tomatoes, tapenade and Provençal herbs are widely used in local cooking, bringing fresh and distinctive flavours to everyday meals.

Being close to the Mediterranean also means seafood features regularly in local meals, bringing even more variety to the regional cuisine.

Why Provence offers the ideal choice for families

There's a reason families from around the world choose Provence for their children's education. The region's exceptional climate, with nearly 300 sunny days each year, creates the perfect backdrop for learning and personal growth. Gentle winters and pleasant summers mean outdoor activities and exploration are possible year-round. Our students, whether they're boarding with us or living locally with their families, experience daily the unique advantages that only Provence can offer. At SVIS, education isn't confined to the classroom, it's enriched by the culture, landscape, and lifestyle that surround the students.
